TEXTS:Colossians 1:12-20

WORD STUDY: The word “inheritance” found in (Colossians 1:12) literally means, “lot”, “portion” or “a person’s share”. The Greek term is {Gr: klēros} which has several meanings, also from where we get the word “Clergy” which means “in Charge”.  But focusing on our text, the context in Col. 1:12 is [Gr: kleronomia], “an inheritance,”. This can also be found in Act 26:18. It deals with what God has in grace assigned to the sanctified or believers in Christ. The other keyword “light” [Gr: phōs] talks about God as Light. He is both the Source and the Light. Therefore, believers have inheritance in Christ, the Source of Life and everything that exists just as light is the source of life.

INTRODUCTION: Most of the world’s wealth is transferred through the power of inheritance! Properties and wealth acquired by a generation are transferred to future generations through the governing laws of inheritance. An inheritance flows through generations by “favour” not by “labour”.  The labours of another generation become the favours of a different generation through the legal power of sonship or adoption. There are two phases of the revelation: one is the Legal side of the plan of Redemption, and the other is the Vital. The Legal is what God did in Christ for us, what legally belongs to us as New Creations. The Vital is what the Spirit through the Word is doing in us in the New Creation. It is His indwelling, His building the nature and blessings into us through the word of God. We will explore both!

  1. THE LEGALITY OF OUR ADOPTION- Romans 8:14-17; 1 John 3:1-3
  • The Cross of Christ was the legal price that freed us from the domain of slavery and poverty
  • In Christ, the Holy Spirit adopted us into God’s family
  • Through faith and confession the Holy Spirit moved us into Christ’s Kingdom of Light
  • Through the vicarious sacrifice and atonement on the Cross our adoption was made legal

  1. THE POWER OF OUR SONSHIP – John 1: 12
  • Our sonship is a product of faith in Christ and what He did for us legally on the Cross
  • Our sonship does not come by works or efforts of men
  • Our sonship is a gift of Grace by God through Jesus Christ
  • Our sonship places us in the same position of authority as Christ (Col. 3:1-4)

  1. THE NATURE OF OUR INHERITANCE- 1 Peter 1:3; Ephesian 1:3-5
  • Our inheritance is comprehensive;  and far beyond the temporal elemental things in this world
  • Our inheritance transcends the economies of this world
  • Our inheritance is secured in the Person of Christ not in any protected castle
  • Our inheritance is inexhaustible and indestructible
